This Standard specifies a method of determining absorption in the UV range as a measure of the total content of dissolved organics in undilued water samples of every kind, including those that are highly coloured orturbid.However,the method does not detect some organic compounds, for example short-chain aliphatics,pure alcohols,pure sugar,etc.

lf the sample contains not only truly dissolved, but also undissolved substances,the measurement does notyield the spectral absorption,α(λ),but the spectral attenuation coefficient μ(λ)(see DIN EN ISO 7027）．
